Sitting All Day? Here’s How It’s Secretly Killing You!

Spending too much time sitting down without taking breaks can boost your chance of dying early by 30%, a recent study in the Journal of the American Heart Association reports. Even though we’ve known that not moving much can be bad for your health, this study shows that exercise doesn’t help much if you still sit a lot.

If your job or habits make you sit for most of the day, you might face various health problems. Sitting a lot means you’re not moving much, which is bad because it means your muscles aren’t contracting, your blood isn’t flowing well, and your body isn’t using sugar properly. All these things can harm your health.

The researchers found that whether people did a little or a lot of active stuff, sitting too long still increased their risk of health issues. Dr. Rakesh Gupta, a doctor at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, explained that sitting for a long time can lead to muscle loss, weak bones, heart problems, and diabetes.

Increased risk of obesity and high blood sugar

When you sit for a long time, the enzyme that helps break down fats isn’t as active. This can lead to higher levels of fats and sugar in your blood, making you gain weight and possibly leading to diabetes over time. Standing up and moving every 30-60 minutes can help keep this enzyme working, which helps control your blood sugar and weight.
